And professionals are also part of this vinyl lovers community. We offer a lot of services for artists and labels; we work with six different factories, 10 mastering studios, dozens of records shops around the world. And we’re here to find each artist the best partners they can work with without any obligation. When you create your account on Diggers Factory, you can either register as a Digger, an Artist, a Label, or a Distributor/Record Shop, and soon, it will be possible to register as a Mastering Studio and Pressing Plant.

Not all of us have access to the kind of gear that the Boards are rocking. As usual though, we can find some good digital approximations on the internet. One of my absolute favourites is James Peck’s VHS Audio Degradation Suite. It provides emulations (with optional speaker simulation) of old video tape audio playback, based on machines in various states of disrepair. If anything digital is going to get you even close to Boards of Canada’s bevy of broken-down gear, this is it. While it’s free, it only works through Native Instruments’ paid Reaktor 6 soft synth platform. If you don’t already have that, you can try it out for 30 days.

This is why we’ve set out to create an online education experience that is more personalized and focused around the student; it’s why we’re always searching for the best producers, composers, songwriters, beat makers, and music business experts to bring into our Soundfly Mentor community; and it’s why we’re constantly tracking down the most helpful resources available to help you grow and improve.

When you’ve got something to offer (a big ol’ crowd filled with fans, friends and family, or a new release under your belt), local venues are sure to take notice. By keeping the needs, expectations, and limitations of the venues and promoters you reach out to, you’ll have the best chance of getting booked.

Well, you’re going to need a tuner pedal; all that hard, consistent strumming is bound to detune some of your strings after every couple of songs! Tuning by ear is pretty tough in club gigs, so it’s always handy to have a direct-signal going into your chain. Almost every guitarist I know uses the Boss TU-3, but the Korg PB01 works just as well and is cheaper! Boss and Korg are household brands. We’re just talking about a tuner pedal here, it doesn’t need to be high end. My trick is to put my tuner at the end of my effects chain, so I can mute all of my FX noise abruptly just by stepping on it once. It’s a lot of fun with powerful climactic endings.

“The title says it all. Break out the crayons, ’cause it gangsta rap coloring time! 48 pages of line drawings of “Gangsta” rappers, done with the thick black line we all remember from the coloring books of our youth. The juxtaposition of the outlaw image of the rappers with the childlike innocence of a coloring book makes for an instant laugh.”

The Dorian mode is spelled: 1  2  ♭3  4  5  6  ♭7; or, in steps: whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half, whole. It’s frequently employed by jazz, soul, and rock soloists, and can be found in the “jam sections” of tons of classic rock and jazz tunes from players like Carlos Santana and David Gilmour (as well as jazz improvisers like Miles Davis).

If you’re a jazz musician you’re also probably transporting your equipment to a ton of gigs, so getting something portable is a good idea. Here are some of my favorite choices for playing jazz:

If you can’t remember when you last turned it on, that’s a bad sign. If it’s more than a year since you last powered it up, even worse. If you’re not even occasionally using a piece of gear it can be hard to justify keeping it around. If you don’t know when you used it last, you probably won’t be using it again anytime soon. Let it go!

As you can imagine, this collection contains many treasures, so we approached them with a proposal to release certain works in a limited edition, and expand the reach of this organization to collectors and listeners everywhere. They loved the idea and chose three cultural icons of which they happened to have exceptional archival recordings.

You also may not like this one (“but I need it, it’s my job!”). Well, you don’t need it every day, all day. Consider deleting social media apps from your phone for one week out of every month. You’ll feel so much lighter. You’ll notice the world around you, and realize there’s so much more than filtered, curated content. You’ll be able to breathe. You’ll be able to be yourself and make real connections with real human beings!

In an excellent think piece, Pitchfork’s Adam Ward waxes nostalgia for the low-bitrate file and its ability to transmit an artistic feeling unique to the medium:
