Far too many first-rate bands can’t seem to make the leap from playing great shows in smaller clubs to playing big rooms on bills that people are actually excited about. A few years of playing smaller rooms and your band should be ready to start making a name for itself. But toiling away in obscurity, waiting for someone to discover you isn’t a viable way to make it as a musician. And if you live in a hyper-competitive music market such as New York City (like I do), you really can’t just wait around.

Music data has a similar problem. As such, it’s impossible for any digital catalog owner, to know exactly what music they have in their database. Without knowing what music you have or what new music you’re adding — your recommendation, discovery, and curation will always suffer.
To really understand why, let’s look at one song where the verse and chorus really do act differently and serve different functions, and look at how they interact with each other; let’s take a look at “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” by late great Whitney Houston.

We are conditioned to think that great vocalists are just born that way — “gifted,” “blessed,” and we wonder if we were given those gifts too… Really? No. Shut up. Try to remember that this is not true. You need to put the work in if you want to be great. It starts with getting yourself a good vocal coach.
“You can’t really beat them for that warm, saturated sound that you can only get from analogue tape. I picked up a digital version recently, an RE-3, and it’s nice for what it does but it doesn’t have the magic of the real ones. I like the crunchiness when you overload the tape and the spring reverb is really good… We’re always picking up interesting old analogue gear, but we’ve never found a tape echo that’s better than the Space Echo yet, so yes, I guess it is something of an icon.”

Here’s an interesting one. In 1983, Haruomi Hosono, a member of the famed Yellow Magic Orchestra with Ryuichi Sakamoto, and a well-known synthesist throughout the 1980s, was asked by the directors at MUJI to create “background music” for their newly opened stores. So, muzak. This blissful, sometimes atonal, wabi-sabi music has been described as “a playful, yet uneasy dream-space of aural fog.” It was released in a short run of cassettes and never heard about again… until now!

Mahea Lee is a classically trained pianist and composer who has a degree from a jazz school and leads an electro-pop band. Her greatest musical passion is lyrical songwriting, but she’s been known to write the occasional fugue. She graduated from Berklee College of Music, where she majored in Contemporary Writing and Production and minored in Music Theory. In the first year after the birth of the platform, a total of 10 projects succeeded. So far, in 2017, we’ve already produced over 20 projects to completion with more coming in every week. We’re seeing growth internationally this year as well, whereas in the first year, our community was predominantly French.
We usually expect the energy to be at peak level in the chorus, but the matter of what “peak level” actually means is open for debate. In most cases, the chorus or drop sections will be the loudest parts of the song, but there are some producers out there who play with our emotions every now and then, and delay that ultimate satisfaction. You might want to go with the approach of creating a very busy pre-chorus that can potentially lead to an even busier chorus, but then leave listeners with a minimalist, stripped-down chorus which somehow counterintuitively hits really hard.
