As social media continues to create opportunities to interact directly with fans, it is important to be proactive on each of your channels to make sure you’re aggregating every potential listener. After all, you don’t want to run the risk of falling out of your new followers’ memory in between visits to their city.

Some guitarists want to hear minimal pick attack in their recordings, while others (myself included) want a lot — especially on guitar solos. Pick attack presence is a combination of pickup selection, pick type, picking location, the angle of the pick, and your amp settings.

Yet, just because somebody with deep pockets purchases something for an exorbitant price, doesn’t guarantee that it will be widely-accepted as a work of art. There have been numerous forays into “fine art” for pop musicians as of late, some of which, in hindsight, were nothing more than marketing stunts to sell more mass-produced album copies.

Taking more than a little inspiration from the 1970s bestseller Zen & The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, this might be the best all-around volume written on audio engineering we’ve seen yet. Mixerman’s gift is his ability to meld his personal experience in recording and mixing with useful practical advice and thought-provoking philosophical musings. He moves easily from the big picture to the small details (and then back again) meaning that this book is just as useful for a relatively experienced reader as it is for a beginner. It’s really got something for everyone.

Soundfly’s The Creative Power of Advanced Harmony takes you beyond cliché chord progressions and patterns, giving you an understanding of how to apply more complex harmonic concepts to your music while retaining a strong emotional core. Moving outside the boundaries of predictable chord progressions is what gives D’Angelo his swagger, Grizzly Bear their sophistication, and Erykah Badu her sense of ethereal other-worldliness.

We spoke to NYC bands Pinc Louds and The Living Strange about how they’re able to create some of the most exciting, innovative live music performances ever!

The second of two articles on time management, we switch gears today to focus on workflow tips and strategies, based on the writer’s years of experience.

The first in our two-course series exclusively focused on mixing, Faders Up I: Modern Mix Techniques takes a macro-lens approach to the mix process, so you’ll get a well-rounded knowledge of every basic parameter used to create professional-sounding audio tracks, including referencing, panning, routing, signal flow, EQ, compression, reverb, and much more. You’ll also learn ear-training exercises to make sure you’re hearing your mix correctly and responsibly. Between the course work and mentor feedback, you’ll come away with priceless advice and insight on your personal mixing process.

Ellisa Sun cuts out her heart and leaves it on the stage — which is why she never wears white. Currently on her first national tour, Ellisa is showing she has what it takes to make it on her own. Just a guitar, a 30-foot RV, and an insatiable desire to perform. Raised in Los Angeles and (until recently) based in the San Francisco Bay Area, her sound is honest, heartfelt, and textured, combining elements of jazz, soul, and pop.

If you are a guitarist writing songs and keen to shape your tone like the unforgettable sounds of My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Ride, and even Mazzy Star, here are the key pedals that can get you there! Who says you need three boards with 20 or more pedals like the original shoegazer Kevin Shields? Save your money and go buy a better amp stack or a cooler guitar! Or, if you’re in a pedalboard trimming phase, and looking to lighten your tour load with a digital pedalboard, check out this brand new free course with Kaki King exploring why and how she now only uses Apple’s MainStage 3 digital pedalboard, a MIDI controller and expression pedal on the road… and why she’ll never go back.

Lastly, simple stage dressings can be very effective. I’ve seen an indie band bring an old TV on stage and play vintage VHS tapes in the background to crowd-pleasing effect. It was basic, but the extra effort and the miscolored TV playing My Cousin Vinny elevated the whole experience.

There are so many ways the lyrics here are shifted outside of the norm as well. One way is that in the second verse, Drake starts the motif a beat late so that the ending of the line comes in right on the down beat, instead of beat four, like it’s been doing.
